So the Fourth: meh.

We made the mistake of getting to the neighborhood park a little too early. Which was instrumental in getting pictures like this:

But also kind of a nightmare when everyone was hot and tired and ready to go home before the fireworks started.

We were able to just barely hold it together until 9:30 for the first few flashes of glitter from the heavens, but that was about it. Archer got cranky, and I fed him in the car while Kieran, Anneke, and Griffon sat on the hood (we weren’t quite as high as we needed to be).

(And yes, holymotherofgod, the temperature really WAS 99 degrees at 9:37 p.m.)

We left about halfway through the fireworks, when miraculous admissions of exhaustion began issuing from the children’s mouths, and Griffon started saying good-bye to the moon.

They were SO hot and tired. When we got home, they made hardly a peep getting ready for bed and gave me absolutely zero grief about not reading books, a nightly ritual.

I don’t know that we’ll do the same thing next year, but I know the kids had fun, and that’s never a bad thing.
